The Big Book

20120418-082438.jpg

I have been dying to make Abby a quiet book for a while now – a fabric book with lots of different textures and activities to help her with her motor skills and imagination. I’ve been collecting ideas on Pinterest FOREVER. (This site and this site are two that I took some pages/tips from.)

So three days before her birthday, with my mom’s help, I finally started working on one, with the goal of having it ready for her birthday.

I don’t recommend following my last minute timeline to complete one of these. We got it done, but it was a loooooong project. Most of the examples I found online took people a couple of weeks to complete..so cramming it into three days was a little…intense.

My mantra during the process was: “It doesn’t have to be perfect.” I WANTED it to be perfectly stitched and designed and completed, but time was not on my side…which is kinda the story of my crafty tendencies. By the end of the book, I’d started sewing a lot less and hot glueing a lot more than I’d planned. The pages are a bit too big (about 11″x11″) and the cover is a bit too small.

But we survived! And it’s pretty cute, even if I did cut a few corners. I hope she enjoys it!

The ice cream page has Velcro on the back of the ice cream scoops. She loves ripping the scoops off and putting them back on.

This page isn’t quite done…I’m planning to make felt farm animal finger puppets, but they aren’t done yet. The barn doors open and there’s a pocket to hold them. And the next page is a scene for her to use with the animals.

Next is the dress up page. She has Velcro so she can be dressed up using the clothes that are stored on the next page.

Next two pages are my faves…Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head! Again, used Velcro for their features.

Next is the apple tree…no tricks here because I ran out of time. Wanted to use buttons to attach the apples, but no time. :( Also no tricks on the stop light page…just good practice with colors. The last page has a shoelace to play/practice with.

And that’s it! O look at her book now and it looks so simple, but the thing was hard work. We used interfacing between the pages for some stiffness and support, and batting for the cover to give it some puff. She’ll have to grow into some of the pages, but that’s good. It should entertain her for a while (hopefully!). :)

Pinterest Pins o’ the Week

bunny_brownie

Lately my Pinterest “to do” list has become quite long.  Scary long, actually.  I have discovered that I’m quite good at finding crafts and projects to do…getting them done is an entirely different thing.

But I did tackle a few additional Pinterest projects over the past few days that I thought I’d share with you.

After searching through Easter crafts on Pinterest, I decided on this project for my secret pal for Easter (and I hope beyond hope that she d0esn’t read my blog so that I can remain her “secret” sister….it was just too cute not to share with you all).  It’s a mix for “Bunny Brownies.”  I hope she liked it!  :)

I also finally bought some cheap cloth prefold diapers to sew into reusable pads for my favorite invention of the moment, my Swiffer WetJet.  The tutorial is here.  I didn’t take pictures of my finished Swiffer pads, because my sewing machine kept skipping stitches for some reason and I got mad and frustrated at how they look…but they will still totally function, and that’s all that really matters, right? They were super fast and easy to make.  I used Gerber prefolds; after scouring the internet for the best price, I ended up just buying a package of 10 at Target for like $11.99, I think.  Still cheaper in the long run to make a few reusable Swiffer pads rather than buying the name brand disposables.  And they clean like a dream, so I’m happy.  :)

Yay for Pinterest!

Abby’s Easter Bunny

Mar12 123

I realize this post would have been more timely had it been posted BEFORE Easter was over and done with.

However, since procrastination is my middle name and I didn’t finish this little project until Saturday night, I am having to share it with you post-Easter.  Sorry about that.

Please meet Abby’s first Easter bunny.  He totally needs a name…my creativity ran out after making him.  :P

In the interest of not spending a ton of money on Easter basket goodies, I decided to sew her an Easter bunny.  And I couldn’t pass up this cute tutorial on how to make a sock bunny.  I found a pair of argyle knee-high socks on clearance at Target for $1.50. (Ok, they are leftover St. Patty’s Day socks, but they totally worked.  And the price was perfect.)

I realized after making this little guy how pathetic my hand sewing skills are…but I like to think my rough stitches just add to the character.  ;)   And I will say, it was a piece of cake to make…except for having to redo my hand stitches a couple of times. Sigh.

And I would also like to say that in 90% of the pictures I took of her hauling her bunny around the house, my child looked drunk.

All in all, a very quick, simple little project.  :)

Crafty Christmas Day 22 – Wooden Coasters

Another fun coaster idea!  Not too difficult, especially if you’re married to a wannabe-logger who would be more than excited to do the sawing for you.  ;)   Here’s the link.

Crafty Christmas Day 18 – Tile Coasters

It just doesn’t get much cuter, cheaper, and easier than these coasters (made from tiles that you can find at any hardware store and scraps of scrap booking paper).  I’ve seen these done with photos, too, which would make an adorable personalized gift.  You can find the easy-peasy tutorial here.

Crafty Christmas Day 17 – Monogram Pillow

Yep, it’s another pillow…but I can’t help it.  I love pillows.  I thought this would be a great option for a grown-up.  Instructions are over here.  Happy sewing!

Crafty Christmas Day 16 – Fabric Covered Cork Boards

I’ve made a few of these, so I can tell you first hand that they are pretty stinking easy.  And adorable.  And easy + adorable = a great homemade gift.  (Or even for yourself!)  Details are here…try it out!

Craft Christmas Day 15 – Personalized Pillows

Cute, cute, cute.  I can’t wait to make these for Abby and Brynlee, my too-sweet little niece.  No real instructions for this one, but the link is here.  Looks like you can order them, too, but they’d be pretty simple to make.  You could maybe even use fabric glue instead of appliqueing…hmmm.  Not sure, but worth looking into.  Anyway, love these.

Crafty Christmas Day 14 – Gift Card Cozy

Giving a gift card this year?  Make it a little more personal by sewing a little cozy for it.  Cuteness!  Here’s the how to.

Crafty Christmas Day 11 – Sisal Rope Bowl

This one was so original that I just had to share it.  It wouldn’t be for everyone, but I am liking it.  Not too difficult and definitely unique.  Go here for instructions.
