The Thunder Rolls

lightning storm nebraska may 2012

Last Friday night we had a little bit of severe weather go through our neighborhood.  My car has the hail damage to prove it.  Sigh.

It’s that time of year in central Nebraska, time for wind and rain and hail and tornadoes.  When you pass official storm chasers on your way home from work, it’s probably a pretty sure thing that you’re going to be getting some pretty major weather very soon.

Which means it’s also the prime time to practice some weather photography!

After the threat of severe weather had passed and my child and I emerged from the basement (I am a paranoid pregnant lady, so yes, we were indeed in the basement for a few minutes), I put her to bed, grabbed my camera, and headed to the porch to snap a few shots of the retreating storm.

It’s tricky to catch lightening while holding the camera still, so this was the best shot I got of this storm.

But about an hour later, storm #2 rolled in just south of our house, so I headed back outside to try again.  This time I grabbed my tripod in order to keep my camera more steady and better capture the lightening.  It made a HUGE difference, and my tripod and I are now BFF’s.  These are all straight out of the camera, no edits.  I can barely edit normal pictures…I would have no clue where to begin editing night time lightening photos. :)

We had some crazy central Nebraska weather that evening, that’s for sure!

Why I Need to Stay Away From Auctions

arch

For an unofficial Girls Night Out outing last week, Tresia, Grandma Connie, Abby and I went to an auction.   A couple who owned a photography studio had retired and were moving on to bigger and better things; we thought there could be some cool photography related paraphernalia for sale. so we decided to check it out.

The auction ended up being mostly random household/garden items, with a few photog supplies and props thrown in.  I purchased a few things, but nothing all that exciting.

Until…

The auctioneer announced near the end of the sale that they would next be selling the outdoor scenes/props, etc.  Interesting.  The owners had lots of outdoor photo sets, and they were going to sell all of the pieces and parts one lot at a time.  I was fascinated, so of course we had to stick around and see how it went.  (By that time, most of the crowd had vanished.)

Stuff was selling totally cheap, probably because they were huge pieces of structure that you couldn’t easily move.  The first random items I bought in this part of the sale were these two concrete culverts.  I have no idea why I bought them, other than the fact that Tresia made me.  I didn’t take a picture of them, and I don’t know what on earth I will do with them, or even how the heck I will move them since they each weigh a ton, but I own them.  And I paid $1 for the pair. (Oh, Tre, by the way, I’ve decided to give you one of them, since you were so encouraging as I bid on them.  Consider it a symbol of gratitude.)

Then we came to this little shaded structure.  It was totally rustic and cute and had loads of charm.  It was something that I could see in our yard (more than anything else that was being sold, at least).

Isn’t it kind of cute?  I think it’s neat.  The auctioneer had to beg someone to bid $5.00 on it ($5.00!?!?!?!), and I couldn’t pass it up…another girl jumped in and upped it to $7.50, I went for $10.00…and won! (But $10 was my max, for real.)

I was totally excited until Tresia and I walked around to the other side of it and saw that there was a whole other wing to my little structure.  It is stinking huge.  There’s another section to it that we couldn’t see when I was bidding.

See what happens when I think to myself, “Gee, wouldn’t that look cute in my yard?  With a little swing or bench underneath it?”  I have GOT to start thinking things through a little bit more.  I have owned this thing for 5 days now, and still haven’t come up with ONE legitimate spot where it would look good in our yard.

And then there is the issue of moving it.  This is the point in the story when I decided to ban myself from auctions for the indefinite future.  Tresia and I were standing and gaping at my purchase, and the seller joined us.  We asked her if we could come back in the next couple of days with some manpower to help us move it out of there; she said, “Oh, of course!  And you’ll probably need to bring a tractor with you to dig up the logs.  And it’s assembled with 8 inch steel rods, so they’ll need something to get those out with, too.”

Oh. My. Word.  A tractor and 8 inch rods for a $10 impulse buy.  Jon was going to kill me.

He always tells me, “No more furniture” when I go off to auctions.  At least I held true to that, right?  It’s definitely not furniture.

Well, he didn’t kill me when I told him about my purchase later that night.   I believe his exact response was, “Well, we can always use it for firewood.”

True.

And his next words were, “So, can you go to an auction in Sargent for me on Saturday?  But don’t buy any furniture.”

Good grief.  Heaven help us.

Here’s To Doing What You Love

I’ve been trying to improve my portrait photography skills. You know, taking nice, pretty, lovely, adorable pictures of kids and families and babies. Oh, how I love the babies.

That being said, I recently realized: I stink at photographing people. I’m really pretty awful at it. It’s just not very natural for me. It’s one big huge struggle, and I don’t know what exactly I’m doing wrong, but lately it just isn’t working for me. I don’t find it fun and I kind of hate it. There. I said it. It’s out there.

But I love, LOVE photographing outdoorsy stuff. Barns, farms, animals, plants, lakes, mountains, Amish buggies…those are the things that get me pumped to get out my camera and click away.

The sad thing is, I haven’t been photographing the things I enjoy lately because I’ve been so down in the dumps about having to take pictures of people and not having them turn out well. My will to shoot gets depleted and instead of getting out there and shooting things I enjoy, I shoot…nothing. Nada. Not even Abby, except for maybe an occasional crummy cell phone pic.

Time to get back on the horse and do what I love. I enrolled in an online photography course through Clickin’ Moms that starts next week and I’m totally pumped about it, now that I’m being honest to myself about what I want to be photographing. Maybe the course will help me out with my people photog skills…and maybe not. Regardless, I’m excited to polish up my skills and know-how. :)

The Big Tornado

tornado 1

So on Sunday, I FINALLY got to see my very first tornado.

Tornadoes creep me out. There’s just something about their skinny, winding shape that freaks me out and make me hate them. Strangely enough, I’m not as scared of the huge, wide F-5 tornadoes that actually cause miles of damage and destruction…just the skinny ones. I think their shape reminds me too much of snakes. Snakes in the sky. I can’t get away from them ANYWHERE. Anyway.

We were on our way home from church on Sunday and as we were pulling into the driveway, we stopped because the clouds right about our house were swirling and circling like crazy. Jon started foaming at the mouth (he is a bit of a storm-chaser wannabe), so I told him to drop Abby and me off and take the pickup to the top of the hill to take a look. So he dumped us off and tore out of the yard. Abby and I went inside to wait for him to return. (We were going to his parent’s house for lunch and cake and ice cream for the birthday girls.) After a few minutes Christie (my sister-in-law) called and said, “We have a tornado touchdown!” And at that moment my husband came running into the house yelling, “Tornado! Tornado! There’s TWO of them! Where’s my phone? WHERE”S MY PHONE?!?!” (He’d left it in the car…he’d been in too big of a hurry to grab it before hopping in the pickup.) Chaos.

So Jon jumped back in the pickup to keep chasing and Abby and I headed to the in-laws’ house to see the show. The tornado was very visible from there.

And it was pretty neat. I saw it as I was driving, but it had gone back up into the clouds by the time I parked the car. I would have been completely freaked out IF it hadn’t been a ways away by that point, but it was across the river heading in the opposite direction, so we were totally safe. I’m a little sick to my stomach that I missed the photographic event of the month, but thankfully Christie got some pics and was willing to let me share them with you.

We told Abby, “We had a spring blizzard on the day you were born and a tornado on your first birthday…what’s nature going to throw at us on April 15 next year?!” :) Good grief!

Baby Steps Towards the Goal…

I’ve been thinking a lot about my goals lately, and being a better photographer is something I’ve been wanting to work on for quite a long time now…which probably isn’t a shock to most of you, since I blog about it pretty regularly.  :/

Wanting to get better at something is one thing…taking the time and steps to actually do it is something else.  At least for this girl.

Sigh.

So I’ve decided it’s time to take action and get serious about learning this photography stuff.  I know I’ve blogged about that before.  But I’m for real this time.  A while back I came across the Clickin’ Moms website, which has LOADS of online educational programs for photographers, from everything to shooting basics to how to use lighting or different types of software or Word Press.

I’m putting away all the books and how-to manuals I’ve purchased to date and I’m taking the plunge and am spending part of my garage sale earnings from last weekend to enroll in Shooting 101: The Best Darn Beginner Course Ever.  You have the option to either be a full participant or just a study along student; their courses tend to sell out super-fast, so I missed out on being able to register as a full participant, but I am totally ok with participating as a study along student this time around.  I’m super excited for April 30, which is when the course is slated to begin…can’t wait!

Mini Camera Tutorial: Adjusting the Exposure

Picture 058

I absolutely struggle with understanding the how’s and why’s of exposure when I take pictures.

No matter how many times my brother has tried to explain it to me, it still sounds a little bit like mumbo-jumbo.

I’m a trial and error kind of photographer…I mess with the settings ’til I find a combination of settings that gives me the image I want, without really understanding what I did to get it.  I keep hoping that someday all the technical stuff will click in my mind and it will all make perfect sense, but until then, I’ll just keep messing around and hoping for the best.

Last week I was taking a few pics at sunrise, and I decided to mess with the little “+/-” button on top of my camera.  I’ve heard that using it at dawn/dusk is a good idea, so I gave it a shot. (Sidenote: I’m shooting with a Pentax K2000 D-SLR.)

The purpose of the “+/-” button is to adjust the exposure.

In layman/Jen terms, that means deliberately overexposing (brightening) or under-exposing (darkening) your picture. The normal setting is at zero.  You can move it up or down in .5 increments.  To brighten your picture, you would move it to .5, 1, 1.5, etc.  To darken a photo, move it down to -.5, -1, -1.5, etc.

Clear as mud?  It’s way easier once you try it out and see.  Trust me.

So, this is the first picture I took that morning.  All of these pics were taken within seconds of each other.  I just had my camera set on the generic auto setting, with the “+/-” set at zero.  (These pics are all untouched…I haven’t edited them at all, so you can see exactly how using the “+/-” button changed the image.)

This one was after I upped the exposure to 1.5…it’s quite a bit brighter!

And this one is when I lowered the exposure to -1.5…lots darker!

None of these are award-winning shots, but hopefully it shows you what’s possible by adjusting the exposure.

The only thing you have to be careful with is re-setting it back to zero after you’re done…it’s a setting that doesn’t automatically return to normal when you turn your camera off, so you have to manually change it back to the original setting.

It’s kind of a fun  button to play around with.  Give it a shot!  :)

Sunday Sunrise

Picture 3987 copy

I’ve been dying to get out and take some early morning pics for about the past week or so.  I can see the sunrise from our living room, and they have been stunning lately.   Fog hovers over the river and creates some pretty spectacular scenes.  One morning last week, I loaded Abby in the car and we went out in search of some photo opps, but by the time I figured out where I wanted to go, the fog was lifting and I shot nada.  Sigh.

On Sunday morning Abby woke up around 6:00ish. I fed her and she fell back to sleep.  I looked outside and saw that it was a little foggy down by the river, so I left my hubby and baby sound asleep in their beds and snuck out.

It was a glorious morning.  I love that each morning is brand new, unique, never seen before and never seen again.  I didn’t get a ton of shots, but that was ok.  There was just something therapeutic about the hunt for great pictures.  So here are some shots from my early morning photo jaunt.

I love fog.
