  • I cannot get enough Cheerios lately. Some days I eat a big yummy bowl of them two or even three times a day. Nom nom.
  • Abby has learned that shaking her head means no. She is not shy about showing her thoughts when there’s something she doesn’t like. Her mom isn’t shy about shaking her head no either, so things are getting interesting between the strong willed child and mother.
  • She’s also obsessed with chewing on flip flops. Ewwww.
  • And she’s wild about other people’s painted toe nails. Consider yourselves warned.
  • Still haven’t done anything about moving our scenic auction purchase to our house. On a higher note, I’ve already doubled my money by reselling the other various photo-related goods I picked up at that auction on eBay, and have many more to sell. Hooray!
  • I want my cousin Hannah to make our wedding invites the next time Jon and I get married. Super stinking cute! (At least, I’m assuming she made them…am I right, Aunt Liz?)
  • We still haven’t even discussed possible names for the baby. When I suggested that maybe we should start discussing it, Jon said, “We have a name – Waylon.” Good grief. We are not naming the kid Waylon. Poor, poor nameless baby.

The Big One

Mar12 193

Abby turned the Big 1 this weekend.  Grandma and Grandpa Grove were here visiting, but had to leave before her actual birthday, so we had a party a couple of days early so they wouldn’t miss the action.  My dad was in charge of making the rainbow cakes and cupcakes…we used this tutorial as a guide.  They turned out pretty stinking cute…and were yummy!

Cupcakes before baking…

Rainbow cakes after baking…

And with whipped topping and sprinkles!

Generously sharing her crumbs with Grandpa…

Wearing her new birthday duds from Grandma and Grandpa Grove…

Abby shares a birthday with her Aunt Christie, so we had birthday cake again yesterday!

Getting schooled on how to blow out candles…

But she still missed the big moment…

Can’t believe she’s a year old already.  Happy birthday, Abby Mae!

  • Well, we are hunkering down for a snow storm. How much snow we should prepare for remains a mystery.  Yesterday the estimate was 10-15.”  Then 8-12.”  Then 4-9.”  I stand behind my original estimate of 3-4.”  I hope the storm proves me wrong, because my camera is totally primed and ready for some magnificent snow storm pics.  We shall see!  I would love nothing more than to be snowed in with a few good movies and some hot cocoa this weekend.
  • I am planning a weekend trip with my BFF, sans husband and baby.   The most exciting part?  The thought of sleeping in as late as I want for the first time in many, many months.  Ahhhhhh.
  • I am realizing at this moment that I really don’t have anything interesting to share with you today.  I apologize for that.
  • Because Grandma and Grandpa in Indiana haven’t seen pics lately, here are some shots of my kid.  (Taken with the 50mm lens.  I still love that lens so much.  I need to use it more.)  :)

Crying It Out And Other Baby Fodder

20120112-102255.jpg

Can I just say that this week may rank as one of the top ten most boring weeks of my life? Not that boring is bad; it’s just…boring.

Here’s what we’ve been dealing with, other than the historic flu battle and post-flu clean-up:

A baby who has forgotten how to nap. Ugh. My worst nightmare. Ever since returning home from our vacation, the child has totally lost her ability to go to sleep in her crib, whether for a nap or at bedtime. This mommy depends on nap time breaks throughout the day to maintain her sanity. The lack of naps has not been pretty for anyone.

I was lenient during flu-time early in the week regarding naps. Abs was held a lot for naps on Monday, which only fueled the fire. But by Tuesday evening, we had a screaming, blubbering baby whenever it was crib-time. So it was time for a little tough love, because I was quickly losing my cool.

For her Wednesday morning nap, I decided it was time to get back in her routine. I didn’t care how long it took-that child would go to sleep, on her own, in her crib.

After 20 minutes of standing in her crib and screaming, I went in, laid her down, patted her bottom, turned her music back on, and left.

After 30 minutes of screaming, I went in and laid her down again.

After 45 minutes of screaming, I started to second-guess the crying it out theory and turned up the volume on the tv to drown out the screams.

And after 53 minutes, she finally gave it up, laid down, and fell asleep.

It was the longest 53 minutes of my life.

Bedtime on Wednesday evening: only cried for 6 minutes, and I never went in again after putting her down. I was very satisfied with that.

Naptime today? Cried for Just a couple of minutes, then done.

Totally worked! I’ll be curious to see how bedtime tonight goes…fingers crossed we’ve gotten her used to sleeping again.

I hated hearing her cry…it’s really hard and breaks my heart, but I think it’s important for her to learn how to go to sleep without Mommy or Daddy holding her. She’s old enough now (9 months) that I’m comfortable letting her cry a while without feeling like it’s going to send her to therapy as an adult. Crying it out isn’t for everyone, but it worked for us…this time.

On another baby note, we resorted to putting up a mock baby gate while baby was feeling better but mom and dad were still a little sick, to avoid having to chase her away from the wood stove (which she is drawn to like a magnet).

So here’s our attempt:

And it worked for all of half a day before she learned how to crawl over the packed-up pack and play. Sigh. We are still using the barricade, because it at least slows her down, but I know it won’t last long. Oh well. We’ll enjoy it while we can. ;)

Strange Thoughts From 1-80

We’re on the way to Indiana. My child is blabbing away to herself in the backseat, Jon is jamming out to Prime Country on the Sirius, and I am blogging. It’s kind of like we never left home. :)

So here are some things I’ve been thinking about. And these are some mind-blowing revelations so prepare yourselves.

- On a travel snack buying binge today at Dollar General, I nabbed a bag if Bugles. Yes, I know they are so 1993, but I still love them. I like putting them on my fingertips like they are fake nails. And they sound like bells tinkling against one another once the bag is open. They are fabulous.

- Paranoid thought of the day alert: Our bank gives out little Laffy Taffy candies when you go through the drive-through. I’m convinced the color/flavor you receive is some sort of measurement as to how fond each teller is of me. For instance, the usual drive-through teller always, always gives me yellow-banana. Yech. Does ANYONE like banana Laffy Taffy? I really think she isn’t very fond of me. But today I got a different teller, and she gave me cherry. I likey. Or maybe I’m being way to psychological about this. Or maybe each teller is assigned a particular color. Hmmm.

- My cute, sweet little girl has turned into a Gremlin. She talks with this deep, scratchy voice that seriously sounds like she’s posessed. She’s especially fond of doing it when we’re in church and it’s nice and quiet. And when she’s looking oh do adorable in her little velvet Christmas dress and all the sweet little church ladies are fawning over her…at that moment she opens her mouth and lets her true colors show. Nice, honey. I always tell her , “No Gremlin Abby,” which of course only makes her do it deeper and louder. She gets this from her father. I overheard them practicing.

- I have now eaten so many Bugles that I think I’m going to be sick. But I still love them. It’s not their fault I have no self-control.

- Shoot. In trying to think of what we forgot at home during our somewhat frantic departure, I just remembered that my cousin asked me to take his laptop back to Indiana for him. We sure are traveling eastbound without it. Dang … Sorry I forgot about that til just now, OJ.

- Whenever I say “eastbound” (like I did above), I want to bust out Smokey and the Bandit. Eastbound and down, loaded up and truckin’….

- Oh, the things you ponder on interstate drives.

- This is going to be a long trip.

I Bought My Kid A Dog Toy Today

20111220-143731.jpg

So Abby and I were doing a little shopping at Alco today, looking for a few Christmas gifts. I was in the toy section, in search of some balls (of which Alco had none, except for those nerf ones that a baby could chew through and demolish in a matter of minutes). While cruising down the baby toy aisle, I glanced to my left and saw…

Lambchop!

Do you remember Lambchop? Sherry Lewis? I loved watching Lambchop when I was a kid. And I had a Lambchop puppet, which has likely become a mouse nest after spending 17 years in my parents basement.

Anyway, this little Lambchop squeaks, which Abby loved. The toy has a big squeaker in her belly AND each of her paws squeak, too. Abby thought it was BIG fun.

“Hmmm. I’ve never seen a squeaking Lambchop before,” I thought to myself. That’s when I noticed the words “Dog Toy” on the label.

We were already both in love with it, so I decided to get it regardless.

Besides, I kind of think it’s totally wrong for cute, innocent, little Lambchop to be a slobbery, chewed up dog toy. It was my civic duty to save her from a unfortunate future with a viscious canine. She’ll be much better off at our house…with a baby who, in all actuality, will probably chew on her just as much as a dog would.

Yep, I think Lambchop’s destiny will definitely be fulfilled.

Shopping and Wrapping

gift wrap

We did a fun event at our church this weekend.

It’s called the “Shop and Wrap.”

Members of our congregation donate new or very gently used items.  We set everything up in the fellowship hall, and invite kids to come Christmas shop.  All items are $.50.

Each kid makes a list (we do limit them to shopping for immediate family and grandparents, to keep it manageable) and gets a personal shopper (youth group kid) to help them pick out their items.  And after they’re all done shopping, we wrap their presents for them.

It’s so much fun to watch the kids pick out items they think their family members will love.  And it’s a great way to instill the importance of giving and developing a generous heart.  They have so much fun shopping for others.  This year we had 51 shoppers, and sold over 400 gifts….which is pretty good for our small town!

That’s a lot of gift-wrapping…let me tell you, those ladies who were wrapping gifts were my heroes by the end of the day.  Here are a couple of our fabulous gift-wrappers in action…

It’s a really neat fundraising and outreach opportunity.  All the money that was earned will go to the youth group and the kids camp fund.  Woo-hoo!  What a great day!
