Why I Need to Stay Away From Auctions

arch

For an unofficial Girls Night Out outing last week, Tresia, Grandma Connie, Abby and I went to an auction.   A couple who owned a photography studio had retired and were moving on to bigger and better things; we thought there could be some cool photography related paraphernalia for sale. so we decided to check it out.

The auction ended up being mostly random household/garden items, with a few photog supplies and props thrown in.  I purchased a few things, but nothing all that exciting.

Until…

The auctioneer announced near the end of the sale that they would next be selling the outdoor scenes/props, etc.  Interesting.  The owners had lots of outdoor photo sets, and they were going to sell all of the pieces and parts one lot at a time.  I was fascinated, so of course we had to stick around and see how it went.  (By that time, most of the crowd had vanished.)

Stuff was selling totally cheap, probably because they were huge pieces of structure that you couldn’t easily move.  The first random items I bought in this part of the sale were these two concrete culverts.  I have no idea why I bought them, other than the fact that Tresia made me.  I didn’t take a picture of them, and I don’t know what on earth I will do with them, or even how the heck I will move them since they each weigh a ton, but I own them.  And I paid $1 for the pair. (Oh, Tre, by the way, I’ve decided to give you one of them, since you were so encouraging as I bid on them.  Consider it a symbol of gratitude.)

Then we came to this little shaded structure.  It was totally rustic and cute and had loads of charm.  It was something that I could see in our yard (more than anything else that was being sold, at least).

Isn’t it kind of cute?  I think it’s neat.  The auctioneer had to beg someone to bid $5.00 on it ($5.00!?!?!?!), and I couldn’t pass it up…another girl jumped in and upped it to $7.50, I went for $10.00…and won! (But $10 was my max, for real.)

I was totally excited until Tresia and I walked around to the other side of it and saw that there was a whole other wing to my little structure.  It is stinking huge.  There’s another section to it that we couldn’t see when I was bidding.

See what happens when I think to myself, “Gee, wouldn’t that look cute in my yard?  With a little swing or bench underneath it?”  I have GOT to start thinking things through a little bit more.  I have owned this thing for 5 days now, and still haven’t come up with ONE legitimate spot where it would look good in our yard.

And then there is the issue of moving it.  This is the point in the story when I decided to ban myself from auctions for the indefinite future.  Tresia and I were standing and gaping at my purchase, and the seller joined us.  We asked her if we could come back in the next couple of days with some manpower to help us move it out of there; she said, “Oh, of course!  And you’ll probably need to bring a tractor with you to dig up the logs.  And it’s assembled with 8 inch steel rods, so they’ll need something to get those out with, too.”

Oh. My. Word.  A tractor and 8 inch rods for a $10 impulse buy.  Jon was going to kill me.

He always tells me, “No more furniture” when I go off to auctions.  At least I held true to that, right?  It’s definitely not furniture.

Well, he didn’t kill me when I told him about my purchase later that night.   I believe his exact response was, “Well, we can always use it for firewood.”

True.

And his next words were, “So, can you go to an auction in Sargent for me on Saturday?  But don’t buy any furniture.”

Good grief.  Heaven help us.

The Big Tornado

tornado 1

So on Sunday, I FINALLY got to see my very first tornado.

Tornadoes creep me out. There’s just something about their skinny, winding shape that freaks me out and make me hate them. Strangely enough, I’m not as scared of the huge, wide F-5 tornadoes that actually cause miles of damage and destruction…just the skinny ones. I think their shape reminds me too much of snakes. Snakes in the sky. I can’t get away from them ANYWHERE. Anyway.

We were on our way home from church on Sunday and as we were pulling into the driveway, we stopped because the clouds right about our house were swirling and circling like crazy. Jon started foaming at the mouth (he is a bit of a storm-chaser wannabe), so I told him to drop Abby and me off and take the pickup to the top of the hill to take a look. So he dumped us off and tore out of the yard. Abby and I went inside to wait for him to return. (We were going to his parent’s house for lunch and cake and ice cream for the birthday girls.) After a few minutes Christie (my sister-in-law) called and said, “We have a tornado touchdown!” And at that moment my husband came running into the house yelling, “Tornado! Tornado! There’s TWO of them! Where’s my phone? WHERE”S MY PHONE?!?!” (He’d left it in the car…he’d been in too big of a hurry to grab it before hopping in the pickup.) Chaos.

So Jon jumped back in the pickup to keep chasing and Abby and I headed to the in-laws’ house to see the show. The tornado was very visible from there.

And it was pretty neat. I saw it as I was driving, but it had gone back up into the clouds by the time I parked the car. I would have been completely freaked out IF it hadn’t been a ways away by that point, but it was across the river heading in the opposite direction, so we were totally safe. I’m a little sick to my stomach that I missed the photographic event of the month, but thankfully Christie got some pics and was willing to let me share them with you.

We told Abby, “We had a spring blizzard on the day you were born and a tornado on your first birthday…what’s nature going to throw at us on April 15 next year?!” :) Good grief!

The Big One

Mar12 193

Abby turned the Big 1 this weekend.  Grandma and Grandpa Grove were here visiting, but had to leave before her actual birthday, so we had a party a couple of days early so they wouldn’t miss the action.  My dad was in charge of making the rainbow cakes and cupcakes…we used this tutorial as a guide.  They turned out pretty stinking cute…and were yummy!

Cupcakes before baking…

Rainbow cakes after baking…

And with whipped topping and sprinkles!

Generously sharing her crumbs with Grandpa…

Wearing her new birthday duds from Grandma and Grandpa Grove…

Abby shares a birthday with her Aunt Christie, so we had birthday cake again yesterday!

Getting schooled on how to blow out candles…

But she still missed the big moment…

Can’t believe she’s a year old already.  Happy birthday, Abby Mae!

Rapid Trip to Rapid City

t8

This weekend, Tresia and I made a whirlwind trip to one of my most favorite places in the whole wide world – Rapid City, SD.  The Big RC.

LOVE that city.  And I’ve missed it greatly…it’d been way too long since my last trip there.

Trying to talk my hubby into relocating there so I can move back.  OK, not really…but maybe we can have a vacation home there someday.  A girl has to have her dreams, right?  On our trip, Tresia and I planned it all out.  We’re going to take our hubbies and retire to the Black Hills and live next to each other so that we can carpool to the senior center for Bingo night.  Perfect!

Anyhoo.  I digress.

We traveled to the Big RC for a few reasons.

  1. We needed a girls weekend out of town without our kiddos.
  2. We heard about a HUGE indoor garage sale that’s held in RC annually, and decided the time was right to check it out.

So we headed out Friday and took our time driving up.  Made a few stops on the way there, including to the infamous Wall Drug, which is always fun.

Here’s Tresia with her new boyfriend.

And her groupies.

And her new BFF.

And her scary rabbit friend.

After we left Wall Drug, we ventured to the Badlands, where we saw this little gem of a sign:

(Which, of course, I had to send to my husband to my prairie dog loving husband(ahem)…but found out the hard way that the data plan on my phone does not work in the Black Hills area.  So just a little caveat to you iPhone-ers out there who may still be on an Alltel plan…when in western South Dakota, your phone will ONLY be a phone while in the area.  No apps, no internet, no texting, nada.)

So once we arrived in Rapid, we did some major shopping at their majorly fabulous new shopping area and the always fantastic Rushmore Mall, and then ate supper at the oh-so-yummy Fuddruckers.  Next we stopped in to see my good friends Amber and Jeremy.  Our visit was way too brief (I’ll just have to go back soon for another one, I guess!), but it was fabulous to see them and their kiddos.

Got a few hours of shut eye, then headed to Black Hills Bagels (which I have been craving for WEEKS now), and had the most divine breakfast EVER.  Tresia had this amazing cinnamon knot, which was topped with about a half pound of cream cheese topping (aren’t you just dying to stick your finger in that frosting??  YUM)…

And I had  “Hogs ‘n Chicks” breakfast bagel sandwich, of which I am still speechless over, three days later.  It was the BEST breakfast sandwich I have ever had.  We ate at 9 am and by 1 pm, I still wasn’t hungry, which is a small miracle for this pregnant woman.  Amazing.

From there…we went to the indoor garage sale!

Over 200 booths.  Big fun!  We both found some treasures…mine included a baby gate (yay!) and a double stroller (woo-hoo!).  There were loads of people at the sale, and we were tuckered out by the time we saw all the booths, but it was fabulous.  Totally worth the drive.

And so after the sale, we made one more last shopping stop, and then headed home.  It was a fast trip, but packed with goodness.

Unfortunately, I returned home to a very sick little baby and a husband who had metal shards stuck in his eye.  Not good.  Everyone’s on the mend now, thank goodness.  Good to be home!  :)

The Thing I Miss the Most

Dear Country Life,

I love you dearly.

You and I have a deep connection that goes beyond muddy roads and cow manure.

You know that I wouldn’t trade you for city life anywhere.

But I must say, the one thing that could make our love perfect and complete is if I could live my country life but still have our garbage whisked away in a garbage truck weekly.  Oh, to have the garbage truck grace our driveway on a regular basis.

Maybe I should be writing this letter to the garbage man.

Sincerely, Jen

Dear Garbage Man,

I miss you. DEARLY.

I miss being able to thoughtlessly throw all – every single little piece – of our garbage into the trashcan and forget about it until trash day, when you would faithfully appear to whisk it all away.

For nearly five years now, I have devotedly and dutifully (if not always happily) sorted our garbage so that the non-burnable items would be separate from the regular trash, which my hubby hauls out to burn.

I hate sorting trash.

How I long for the days when tin cans, rotten lettuce, and tin foil could live harmoniously with the rest of our trash in our trash can until the day YOU would come and take it all away, no questions asked, no sorting required, no requirements on what could and couldn’t be included in my trash bags.

I don’t miss you enough to move back to civilized city life…but I just felt it was important to let you know that of all the comforts of life in town, you are what I miss the most.

Sincerely, Jen

Auction Hunting

The Presbyterian Church in a nearby town closed recently.  So a few weeks ago, they had an auction to sell off a bunch of the items in the church.

It’s very sad to me that a church had to close.

However, that being said, in the bleak Nebraska mid-winter, an auction is about as exciting as it gets ’round these parts.  And I love me a good auction.  I’d been going through auction withdrawals.  So, my mother-in-law and I went to check out the action and if nothing else, get out of the house for a couple of hours.  ;)

It was kind of neat to go to an auction that had different types of items, as opposed to your run-of-the-mill household auction stuff.

Some of the items for sale: pews, pianos, an organ, tables, stained glass window, chairs, REAL slate chalkboards (man, did I want one of those, but they went way out of my price range), altar decorations, and lots and lots of other unique items.  It was really interesting.

I was particularly interested in a couple of items from the nursery that I’d seen listed in the sale bill.  And I won a two of four items I was most interested in…yay!

One was this little rocking horse.  I think it’s stinking adorable. (Sorry for the awful, terrible, no good cell phone pics that will follow.  I didn’t feel like dragging out the big dog camera yesterday.)

My kid’s not into it at ALL.

And I also came home with this fabulous old, wooden bowling pin set.  The ball is so heavy that Abby probably won’t be able to lift it until she’s 10, but she’ll get there eventually.

Susan went home with an adorable little wooden chair and an oh-so-neat wooden sheet music cabinet.  We found some good treasures.  Yay for antiques and auctions!!

This Week’s Randomness

- Tonight I broke the cardinal rule: never go grocery shopping when hungry. I went in for milk, OJ, and bread. I came out with chocolate chip waffles, Chinese food (orange chicken and crab rangoons), a couple of chicken cordon bleus, cranberries, and hot pockets. Not only was I shopping with my appetite, but there were some AWESOME deals in the freezer section. I can’t pass up good buys at the grocery store.

- Abby was a little underweight at her nine month appointment, so we started supplementing with formula a few times a day. I’m ok with that. Baby girl needs the fat content, and I’more than ready to take a break from nursing.

- We’re watching The Fugitive tonight. Still love this movie, even after almost 20 years.

- It was stinking cold today. If it’s gonna be cold, I’d at least like some snow to go along with it. I totally have snow envy right now; it’s snowing at mom and dad’s (again), and they’re expecting 6 inches. Sigh.

- I hate – no, let’s make that loathe – laundry.

- So far, I’m sticking with my resolve to wash up the pots and pans right after the meal. It’s wonderful! Life changing! Love it!! Love walking into a clean kitchen and seeing a clean sink every am.

The Biggest Indoor Garage in the World…Or At Least in Nebraska

Since going part-time at work after Abby was born, I’ve occasionally made a little extra money by selling off the contents of our home on eBay. If it’s not nailed down, it’s for sale; that’s my motto.

I have a love-hate relationship with eBay. I love making money and getting stuff out of our house by selling off our goods, but I kind of hate the humdrum of posting the listings, and answering questions from bidders, and paying eBay AND PayPal fees, and so on. Plus, there are lots of items in our house that I won’t put on eBay simply because they’re too big or odd-shaped, making them hard to mail.

So a while ago Tresia and I were talking about our love for garage sales (both shopping AND selling) and the lack thereof during the winter months, and about how we start to go through garage sale withdrawals mid-winter every year. We’re garage sale junkies. We start needing a fix come February.

And we jokingly talked about finding a place in our town to host an indoor garage sale in March(ish), to feed our addiction.

Only I’ve started thinking a little bit more seriously about it lately, and I think…it’s a super excellent idea. There have to be other people out there that miss garage sales just as much as we do during the winter months, that would come and shop (or have a booth).

I mean, I have a ton of junk in my house. And it needs to go. ASAP.

And I need to find some new junk for my house. ASAP.

So, are we crazy? Are there other people who get as excited about the idea of garage-saling…indoors…SOON…with lots of sales on one location? I think it sounds like heaven on earth. :)

Hair Dye-saster

Vacation is over. I’m back on the grid.

And I have purple hair.

I guess the technical term would be “burgundy.” While on vacay, I got the urge to color my hair. I used to dye all the time, but it had been a while and my mouse-brown needed a pick-me-up.

So I bought a color that looked fun, and Sarah colored it for me. And at first, I really liked it.

But four days later, I was still scaring myself every time I caught my reflection in the mirror. That’s not good. I found myself afraid to run errands in town for fear that someone would see my hair. It was pretty bad. VERY bright. I’m not a bright hair color kind of gal…call me boring, but I like to play it a little more subtle. So when I got word that my mother-in-law was traveling to the big city, I seized the chance to get out of town and buy some more hair color to remedy my “situation.”

I knew I’d have to attempt this dye job on my own, which would be tricky, so I bought the Sublime Mousse brand, thinking it’d be easier to use than traditional color. I got a very dark brown color, hoping to cover up the mess of purple on my head.

And the mousse dye was super easy to use…only it wasn’t really all that effective. Before I even rinsed I could tell…I was still purple.

Sigh.

It is better now, but it’s still got that definite red/purple hue. Instead of being bright burgundy, it’s now dark burgundy. And it’s more interesting than my real color, so mission accomplished there, I guess. ;) As my mother says, “This too shall pass.” Eventually.

Strange Thoughts From 1-80

We’re on the way to Indiana. My child is blabbing away to herself in the backseat, Jon is jamming out to Prime Country on the Sirius, and I am blogging. It’s kind of like we never left home. :)

So here are some things I’ve been thinking about. And these are some mind-blowing revelations so prepare yourselves.

- On a travel snack buying binge today at Dollar General, I nabbed a bag if Bugles. Yes, I know they are so 1993, but I still love them. I like putting them on my fingertips like they are fake nails. And they sound like bells tinkling against one another once the bag is open. They are fabulous.

- Paranoid thought of the day alert: Our bank gives out little Laffy Taffy candies when you go through the drive-through. I’m convinced the color/flavor you receive is some sort of measurement as to how fond each teller is of me. For instance, the usual drive-through teller always, always gives me yellow-banana. Yech. Does ANYONE like banana Laffy Taffy? I really think she isn’t very fond of me. But today I got a different teller, and she gave me cherry. I likey. Or maybe I’m being way to psychological about this. Or maybe each teller is assigned a particular color. Hmmm.

- My cute, sweet little girl has turned into a Gremlin. She talks with this deep, scratchy voice that seriously sounds like she’s posessed. She’s especially fond of doing it when we’re in church and it’s nice and quiet. And when she’s looking oh do adorable in her little velvet Christmas dress and all the sweet little church ladies are fawning over her…at that moment she opens her mouth and lets her true colors show. Nice, honey. I always tell her , “No Gremlin Abby,” which of course only makes her do it deeper and louder. She gets this from her father. I overheard them practicing.

- I have now eaten so many Bugles that I think I’m going to be sick. But I still love them. It’s not their fault I have no self-control.

- Shoot. In trying to think of what we forgot at home during our somewhat frantic departure, I just remembered that my cousin asked me to take his laptop back to Indiana for him. We sure are traveling eastbound without it. Dang … Sorry I forgot about that til just now, OJ.

- Whenever I say “eastbound” (like I did above), I want to bust out Smokey and the Bandit. Eastbound and down, loaded up and truckin’….

- Oh, the things you ponder on interstate drives.

- This is going to be a long trip.
