  • I cannot get enough Cheerios lately. Some days I eat a big yummy bowl of them two or even three times a day. Nom nom.
  • Abby has learned that shaking her head means no. She is not shy about showing her thoughts when there’s something she doesn’t like. Her mom isn’t shy about shaking her head no either, so things are getting interesting between the strong willed child and mother.
  • She’s also obsessed with chewing on flip flops. Ewwww.
  • And she’s wild about other people’s painted toe nails. Consider yourselves warned.
  • Still haven’t done anything about moving our scenic auction purchase to our house. On a higher note, I’ve already doubled my money by reselling the other various photo-related goods I picked up at that auction on eBay, and have many more to sell. Hooray!
  • I want my cousin Hannah to make our wedding invites the next time Jon and I get married. Super stinking cute! (At least, I’m assuming she made them…am I right, Aunt Liz?)
  • We still haven’t even discussed possible names for the baby. When I suggested that maybe we should start discussing it, Jon said, “We have a name – Waylon.” Good grief. We are not naming the kid Waylon. Poor, poor nameless baby.

The Big One

Mar12 193

Abby turned the Big 1 this weekend.  Grandma and Grandpa Grove were here visiting, but had to leave before her actual birthday, so we had a party a couple of days early so they wouldn’t miss the action.  My dad was in charge of making the rainbow cakes and cupcakes…we used this tutorial as a guide.  They turned out pretty stinking cute…and were yummy!

Cupcakes before baking…

Rainbow cakes after baking…

And with whipped topping and sprinkles!

Generously sharing her crumbs with Grandpa…

Wearing her new birthday duds from Grandma and Grandpa Grove…

Abby shares a birthday with her Aunt Christie, so we had birthday cake again yesterday!

Getting schooled on how to blow out candles…

But she still missed the big moment…

Can’t believe she’s a year old already.  Happy birthday, Abby Mae!

Save more, Scream Less

Yesterday in the mail, we received a bill that always makes me want to lose my lunch:

Homeowner’s insurance.  Blech.

We pay our homeowner’s insurance twice a year.   I know it’s a necessity and there’s no way around having it, but it’s so dang expensive.

And the worst part about receiving that bill is that it serves as a reminder that the following month, our auto insurance is due.  Double blech.

So when it comes time to pay those bills, I reluctantly pull money out of our savings account (which about kills me because money in a savings account is meant to be SAVED, not spent) and send it off to the blood sucking insurance company.

(OK, insurance companies aren’t blood sucking.  Sorry for my little rant.  I know how important insurance is, and I’m VERY thankful for it, and I’m especially thankful that we have the resources to pay for it.  It just SOMETIMES feels like after the bill is paid, that money just vanishes into thin air.  Rant over.)

I stumbled across this site on Pinterest this morning that totally may make me change my attitude about writing checks to the insurance company…and those other “irregular” bills that pop up either unexpectedly or infrequently during the year, like car registration or random medical expenses.

The title of the series I stumbled upon is “Living on Less Than $28,000/year.”  Sounded interesting, so I clicked over to it and right away felt encouraged in the area of finances, which is typically my #1 enemy.

The blogger (Kimberlee at The Peaceful Mom) talks about her family’s system of covering those irregular bills.  They set up automatic deposits into a separate checking account every payday, an account that they ignore until one of those irregular bills come along.  The money is there in the account, waiting for an irregular bill, and it’s not a strain on their regular monthly budget OR their savings account when those bills finally do pop up.

You can read more details about her method here.  I highly recommend checking out what she has to say!  This is a blog that I’m going to be checking out frequently now.  I totally appreciate her perspective and values, and she has loads of information on getting organized (including printables! I love printables!), living simply, low cost meal ideas, and lots and lots more.

She also offers a free e-book (“Save More, Clip Less”) if you like her on Facebook.  I downloaded it, and it has loads of tips on how to have a manageable grocery budget WITHOUT couponing.  I’m all for using coupons, but “extreme couponing” just isn’t possible in our little town.  It’s kind of refreshing to hear some budgeting tips for those of us who don’t have the time or resources to do extreme couponing.

Totally excited to have stumbled across this site.  Thank you, Candice, for passing it along via Pinterest!!  :)

My Stinking Facebook Addiction

I heard this somewhere recently, that Facebook is even more addicting than cigarettes nowadays.

At first I was like, “Uh, yeah right.”  But they explained that it’s because Facebook is soooo accessible.  Totally true!  If I’m at work, I can check Facebook anytime I want, all day long. And it’s even worse if you’re like me and have it on your phone, too.  I’m really truly able to check it anytime, day or night, 24/7.

And it IS addicting.  At times, I’m totally grossed out by how addicted I am to it.  And I think I can honestly say that 85% of the time, I’ll often get onto Facebook out of sheer boredom, which isn’t exactly a good reason.  At all.

Which is why I have declared Sunday at Facebook-free day.  Well, it’s one of the reasons.

I’ve been slowly working at making Sunday a true day of rest.  I think the Lord knew what we needed when he declared Sunday to be a day of rest.  We need time to unwind and be still and calm and unwind and relax and just be.  And it’s hard (for me, anyway) to do that when i am constantly hustling and bustling and “plugged in.”

So I’ve been trying to make Sundays a day where we go to church as a family, and then come home and just chill.

No laundry, no scrubbing toilets, no paying bills.  And NO Facebook.

Lots of reading, and naps, and REAL down time.

There’s something freeing about breaking the Facebook addiction…about having the power to look at that little icon on my phone and CHOOSING to ignore it for 24 hours.  I’m liking that feeling.

So just know that as much as I love all of you, any attempts to contact me on Sunday via Facebook will be ignored until Monday morning rolls around.  (You can always call or text me, however.  I’m not THAT unplugged on Sundays.)  ;)

This Week’s Randomness

- Tonight I broke the cardinal rule: never go grocery shopping when hungry. I went in for milk, OJ, and bread. I came out with chocolate chip waffles, Chinese food (orange chicken and crab rangoons), a couple of chicken cordon bleus, cranberries, and hot pockets. Not only was I shopping with my appetite, but there were some AWESOME deals in the freezer section. I can’t pass up good buys at the grocery store.

- Abby was a little underweight at her nine month appointment, so we started supplementing with formula a few times a day. I’m ok with that. Baby girl needs the fat content, and I’more than ready to take a break from nursing.

- We’re watching The Fugitive tonight. Still love this movie, even after almost 20 years.

- It was stinking cold today. If it’s gonna be cold, I’d at least like some snow to go along with it. I totally have snow envy right now; it’s snowing at mom and dad’s (again), and they’re expecting 6 inches. Sigh.

- I hate – no, let’s make that loathe – laundry.

- So far, I’m sticking with my resolve to wash up the pots and pans right after the meal. It’s wonderful! Life changing! Love it!! Love walking into a clean kitchen and seeing a clean sink every am.

What I Want To Do

I’ve never been good at making resolutions at the start of a new year.  Usually by the second week of January, I have forgotten what I even resolved to do, so I didn’t even attempt it this year.

That being said, there is a looooooong list of things in my life that I should improve.  I’m oh-so-good at making excuses and rationalizing my bad behavior.  For example, “I can eat four Christmas Tree Little Debbie’s because I walked to the mailbox today.”  Mmm-hmmm.

I have had a couple of things pop into my mind over the past week or so that I’ve decided will be my goals for the next few weeks…or months…or year(s)….however long it takes!

The first is my practical goal: wash the supper dishes each and every night after our meal.  Good grief, I feel so pathetic for typing that.  I’m great at cleaning up after supper, and putting away leftovers, and straightening up the kitchen.  But I am TERRIBLE at those darn dishes.  Ok, maybe dishes is too broad.  I should say pots and pans.  Plates and utensils and glasses are easy, because they get thrown in the dishwasher.  But I despise pots and pans.  So they usually get put in the sink to “soak” (aka be ignored) until the next day…or the day after that…or…well, you get the point.   It’s really, really bad.  SO.  My new goal is to wash the pots and pans IMMEDIATELY upon the completion of the meal.  I am on day three of this, and it’s going successfully so far.  How many days does it take to make a new habit?  21?

My other goal will be a little more difficult.  It’s to “be where I am.”  I’m really bad about being somewhere physically, but having my head and thoughts somewhere completely separate.  For instance, if I’m at work, I’m thinking about things that need to be done at home.  If I’m at home, I’m thinking about what to blog about next.  If I’m driving down the highway, I’m thinking about how I wish we could go to the Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo this year.  Now, if I were in the “now” as I was driving along, instead of wishing we were out of town, I would notice the bald eagles roosting in trees next to the river I’m flying past at 65 mph.  Or if I were less distracted at home, I’d spend more time on the floor playing with Abby, seeing more of her smiles and getting more of her snuggles.   I just haven’t been a very good steward of my time lately.  I hope I can change that.  Soon.

We Have Survived

I have just eaten for the first time in almost 24 hours. I’m considering this a major accomplishment, because our little family has had the worst, most awful bout with the flu over the past 36 hours. Terrible.

Abby had it Monday, Jon had it Monday night, and I had it Tuesday. It was NOT pretty. Take every possible symptom associated with the flu…we had them all. In full force.

And it was apparently a family affair. Jon’s mom, dad, grandma, brother, and sister-in-law all had it, too. Big fun.

It was my first time being sick while being a mommy, and it was rough. Thank goodness Jon was starting to feel better by the time I got hit hard with it…he was awesome at taking care of baby girl as mommy laid there feeling like death.

We’re still feeling a little puny today, but we have survived and pulled through. And hopefully that’s the first and last time we see anything that awful for a LONG time. Ugh.

Craft Christmas Day 15 – Personalized Pillows

face

Cute, cute, cute.  I can’t wait to make these for Abby and Brynlee, my too-sweet little niece.  No real instructions for this one, but the link is here.  Looks like you can order them, too, but they’d be pretty simple to make.  You could maybe even use fabric glue instead of appliqueing…hmmm.  Not sure, but worth looking into.  Anyway, love these.

Thankful Thursday

I’m finally feeling Christmas-y. Not sure why it took so long this year, but the mood finally found me, and now it’s full-steam ahead, with Happy Christmas albums (volumes 1, 2, AND 3) playing loudly in the background. Fa-la-la-la-la!
