My Favorite Quotes of the Week

A couple of random quotes I’ve appreciated recently:

  •  ”Invite people over, even when your house isn’t perfect.  You don’t have to be perfect.  Perfect is scary for us normal people.”  – comment by Angie on Making Couple Friends post at (in)courage
  • “Most people who go to college, for example, they go for four years, and they spend a lot of money to do it, and they don’t get any income during that four years, but what they’re learning is information that will eventually make them valuable to somebody. It’s exactly the paradigm with photography. You have to think of it as college. If you’re just starting and you’re just thinking about it now, expect to take four years of learning the craft, learning some trade behind it, and spend some money, spend some time and resources, and when you come out of that, you will probably be at a point where your earning college grad money.”  Dan Heller, in this interview.  LOVE this thought this week because it reminded me (and reassured me) that it’s going to take time and hard work and lots of learning to make them happen…they aren’t going to happen immediately or over night.  Duh, Jen.
  • “God does not expect me to be qualified, He wants me to be obedient and unafraid.” – Tresia, from her blog post Under Qualified

My Stinking Facebook Addiction

I heard this somewhere recently, that Facebook is even more addicting than cigarettes nowadays.

At first I was like, “Uh, yeah right.”  But they explained that it’s because Facebook is soooo accessible.  Totally true!  If I’m at work, I can check Facebook anytime I want, all day long. And it’s even worse if you’re like me and have it on your phone, too.  I’m really truly able to check it anytime, day or night, 24/7.

And it IS addicting.  At times, I’m totally grossed out by how addicted I am to it.  And I think I can honestly say that 85% of the time, I’ll often get onto Facebook out of sheer boredom, which isn’t exactly a good reason.  At all.

Which is why I have declared Sunday at Facebook-free day.  Well, it’s one of the reasons.

I’ve been slowly working at making Sunday a true day of rest.  I think the Lord knew what we needed when he declared Sunday to be a day of rest.  We need time to unwind and be still and calm and unwind and relax and just be.  And it’s hard (for me, anyway) to do that when i am constantly hustling and bustling and “plugged in.”

So I’ve been trying to make Sundays a day where we go to church as a family, and then come home and just chill.

No laundry, no scrubbing toilets, no paying bills.  And NO Facebook.

Lots of reading, and naps, and REAL down time.

There’s something freeing about breaking the Facebook addiction…about having the power to look at that little icon on my phone and CHOOSING to ignore it for 24 hours.  I’m liking that feeling.

So just know that as much as I love all of you, any attempts to contact me on Sunday via Facebook will be ignored until Monday morning rolls around.  (You can always call or text me, however.  I’m not THAT unplugged on Sundays.)  ;)

Just Thinkin’…Couple Friends

Not much to blab about today, but I wanted to share this link from (in)courage with you about making couple friends.  I thought it was interesting and worth sharing.   Our church congregation doesn’t have many people our age (late 20′s, early 30′s), and creating supportive, authentic friendships is something I’ve been thinking about lately.   I’m not sure what I’m rambling about…except to say that this post and all the comments were kind of thought provoking.

What I Want To Do

I’ve never been good at making resolutions at the start of a new year.  Usually by the second week of January, I have forgotten what I even resolved to do, so I didn’t even attempt it this year.

That being said, there is a looooooong list of things in my life that I should improve.  I’m oh-so-good at making excuses and rationalizing my bad behavior.  For example, “I can eat four Christmas Tree Little Debbie’s because I walked to the mailbox today.”  Mmm-hmmm.

I have had a couple of things pop into my mind over the past week or so that I’ve decided will be my goals for the next few weeks…or months…or year(s)….however long it takes!

The first is my practical goal: wash the supper dishes each and every night after our meal.  Good grief, I feel so pathetic for typing that.  I’m great at cleaning up after supper, and putting away leftovers, and straightening up the kitchen.  But I am TERRIBLE at those darn dishes.  Ok, maybe dishes is too broad.  I should say pots and pans.  Plates and utensils and glasses are easy, because they get thrown in the dishwasher.  But I despise pots and pans.  So they usually get put in the sink to “soak” (aka be ignored) until the next day…or the day after that…or…well, you get the point.   It’s really, really bad.  SO.  My new goal is to wash the pots and pans IMMEDIATELY upon the completion of the meal.  I am on day three of this, and it’s going successfully so far.  How many days does it take to make a new habit?  21?

My other goal will be a little more difficult.  It’s to “be where I am.”  I’m really bad about being somewhere physically, but having my head and thoughts somewhere completely separate.  For instance, if I’m at work, I’m thinking about things that need to be done at home.  If I’m at home, I’m thinking about what to blog about next.  If I’m driving down the highway, I’m thinking about how I wish we could go to the Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo this year.  Now, if I were in the “now” as I was driving along, instead of wishing we were out of town, I would notice the bald eagles roosting in trees next to the river I’m flying past at 65 mph.  Or if I were less distracted at home, I’d spend more time on the floor playing with Abby, seeing more of her smiles and getting more of her snuggles.   I just haven’t been a very good steward of my time lately.  I hope I can change that.  Soon.

Thankful Thursday

Shopping and Wrapping

gift wrap

We did a fun event at our church this weekend.

It’s called the “Shop and Wrap.”

Members of our congregation donate new or very gently used items.  We set everything up in the fellowship hall, and invite kids to come Christmas shop.  All items are $.50.

Each kid makes a list (we do limit them to shopping for immediate family and grandparents, to keep it manageable) and gets a personal shopper (youth group kid) to help them pick out their items.  And after they’re all done shopping, we wrap their presents for them.

It’s so much fun to watch the kids pick out items they think their family members will love.  And it’s a great way to instill the importance of giving and developing a generous heart.  They have so much fun shopping for others.  This year we had 51 shoppers, and sold over 400 gifts….which is pretty good for our small town!

That’s a lot of gift-wrapping…let me tell you, those ladies who were wrapping gifts were my heroes by the end of the day.  Here are a couple of our fabulous gift-wrappers in action…

It’s a really neat fundraising and outreach opportunity.  All the money that was earned will go to the youth group and the kids camp fund.  Woo-hoo!  What a great day!
